The View’s Whoopi Goldberg defends Taylor Swift’s accolade after Sunny Hostin criticism
After Taylor Swift was awarded with Time magazine’s Person of the Year title, Whoopi Goldberg swept in as a defender. When Sunny Hostin raised some concerns, The View hosts disagreed
The View hosts delved into the world’s biggest current event — Taylor Swift’s Person of the Year honor.
Most of the ladies agreed that it was well deserved considering Taylor’s impact this past year, the relentless media coverage, and her political involvement. Taylor was up against figures like Vladimir Putin, the Hollywood strikers, Trump’s prosecutors, and more. As a result, Sunny Hostin expressed discontent about Time magazine’s decision.
“I feel like law enforcement, the Trump prosectors may be able to save our economy… they also had a couple of other people. If the motto for the magazine is the most who affect the news and our lives,” Sunny trailed off. “I was surprised by this.”

Whoopi Goldberg was adamant that Taylor made perfect sense to receive this honor. She said: “We have sat at this table and talked about this girl…They give it to the person who has had the most impact. Her impact has been startling.”
Sunny did concede that the award can be given to someone who has had any sort of impact. “It can be for good or ill,” she explained. In fact, it’s worth noting that Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Nikita Khrushchev, and more have held the title. The Person of the Year honor is meant to recognize someone who has had the most influence globally across the most people.
While that title doesn’t necessarily need to even be political, Whoopi and Joy Behar both pointed out that Taylor’s impact isn’t limited to just entertainment. Whoopi said: “She’s encouraging young women and people to get out and vote… She’s doing a lot. She’s not just laying around.”

Sara Haines playfully added: “We never saw a Red Wave, but we saw a Lavender Haze. This is the year of Taylor.”
Joy additionally commented on the economic influence Taylor had on the U.S. economy. She cited statistic from the federal government that suggest her Eras Tour may have had a $5.7 billion boost. The hosts additionally discussed Taylor’s use of her own funding, including charitable giving and unprecedented high wages for her employees. Joy emphasized that “more celebrities” need to step up.
Alyssa Farah Griffin pointed out how Universities across the nation have been teaching classes around Taylor specifically. In fact, Taylor even was given an honorary doctorate from New York University in 2022. Alyssa said: “She has an ability to do major good for this country and she always uses it.”
