‘Very Proud’ Mom Laraine Newman Talks About Daughter Hannah Einbinder’s Success: ‘So in Awe’
Laraine Newman feels like a proud mom to see the success her daughter Hannah Einbinder has achieved from the popular TV series Hacks.
“I’m really so in awe of how quickly she’s developed as an actor,” Newman, 72, exclusively told Us Weekly at The Groundlings 50th Anniversary Event in Los Angeles. “When she started it, I was so worried she had no acting experience at all, so she really rose to the occasion, I would say admirably.”
Einbinder, 29, landed HBO’s Hacks in 2021 with no prior acting experience. Over the show’s three seasons, she’s received three Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series as well as two Golden Globe nods. In the show, Einbinder plays Ava Daniels, a young comedy writer who’s partnered to veteran comic Deborah Vance (Jean Smart).
However, comedy is something Einbinder was well versed in long before Hacks. Newman was one of the original Saturday Night Live cast members, Newman and she shares children Hannah and Spike Einbinder with comedy writer Chad Einbinder. Newman celebrates both her children following in her footsteps.
“Both my kids, fortunately they have an aptitude for the work,” Newman said. “So, the only thing I said was, ‘It’s tough. Work hard, be kind to people and let the chips fall where they may. Enjoy the work because you never know what’s going to happen.’”
Newman is also very vocal in supporting her kids. In September, she took to social media to share her dismay after The Bear star Liza Colón-Zayas won an Emmy in the category of best supporting actress in a comedy series over her daughter who was also nominated.
“F—. THE. BEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Newman wrote via X on Sunday, September 15, before she soon deleted the post. In an also deleted post, she responded to a fan who questioned her opinion, “I know. I took it down. Not my best moment.”
Newman later wrote on X (which is also now deleted), “I think the Bear is a great show but IMHO it’s not a comedy- not even a dark comedy.”
However, Hacks did beat out The Bear for Outstanding Comedy Series.
When asked if she would ever appear on Hacks or if there’s been any talk about it, Newman replied, “There has been no talk, but I am proud. And they’ve also got so many great people on that show and it’s a really specific tone and they’ve got a lot of people to choose from.”
She further explained that she doesn’t know if she’ll ever share the screen with her daughter someday, before telling Us, “I haven’t really thought about it.” For now, she’s just like any proud mom, cheering on Hannah from the sidelines.
