“Some people refused to wear life jackets because they were busy taking selfies. They also said that wearing life jackets interfered with sunbathing,” Sao Vincente police chief Marcos Alexandra Alfino said, citing the captain’s testimony.
According to local media, the two victims boarded a speedboat to get to shore with four other influencers after partying on a luxury yacht off the coast of Sao Paulo on September 29.
The speedboat captain told police he was asked to carry six people, while the maximum capacity was only five passengers, causing the boat to lose control in the fierce waves, throwing passengers into rough waters.
