Singer Lyfe Jennings is recalling his time on ‘Love And Hip-Hop: Atlanta’ and the viral scene where he acted as if he was proposing to his castmate and girlfriend Karlie Redd, but really was breaking up with her with a “$30 ring.”
During the series, Lyfe Jennings and Karlie Redd briefly dated. But things came to a screeching halt when Jennings claimed Redd was seeing other guys behind his back. Meanwhile, Redd claimed it was Jennings who wasn’t being truthful, claiming she heard he had a whole wife in another country.
In the viral ‘Love And Hip-Hop: Atlanta’ scene, Karlie Redd met up with Lyfe Jennings at Echo Park in Los Angeles, where she planned to confront him about rumors she heard. However, Jennings had other motives and while making it appear that he was ready to get down on one knee and propose to Redd, he pulled out the ring and then told her she would never find another man like him.
Nearly 10 years later, Lyfe Jennings is recalling his viral ‘Love And Hip-Hop: Atlanta’ scene and how he broke up with Karlie Redd with a $30 ring. Appearing on Angela Yee’s ‘Lip Service’ podcast, Jennings reflects on the wild moment. Jennings began, “That ring was real. That ring was a real commitment. It might not have been a real diamond, but it was…” Yee interjected and asked if the diamond was cubic zirconia to which he replied, “I don’t even think it was cubic. I think it was more rectangle.”
When asked why he gave Redd a ring knowing he was going to break up, he said, “Nah, because… I’mma say this on this show and I’ve never said it before, because I don’t want to put nobody in a bad light. Me and Karlie are cool. I’ve spoken to her after that, she’s successful, got a couple fast food restaurants…”
He continued, “I don’t think she’ll be mad at me for telling my truth. So, I used to deal with Karlie Redd before I was ever on ‘Love And Hip-Hop.’” He said Redd constantly asked him to join her on the show, which he admitted he never watched. He said he always turned her down and finally broke down when he had an album coming out that he needed to promote. Jennings said Redd promised to help promote his album, so he agreed. But, once he got on the show, he said things were not on the up-and-up.
He said as a positive man, he thought he’d be able to spread love, but instead he “got dragged” and “never promoted [his] album.” Lyfe Jennings said someone behind the scenes pulled him to the side on the day he and Karlie Redd shot their viral ‘Love And Hip-Hop’ scene. He said the man told him that Redd was getting ready to “clown him” and “make him look crazy” by telling him she was sleeping with another man.
Trying to get a leg up on Redd, Jennings quickly decided to fake a proposal and “make a classic moment in ‘Love And Hip-Hop’ history.” After getting the warning about what Karlie Redd was reportedly planning to do, Lyfe Jennings said he quickly searched for a cheap ring and found one for $30, and the rest was history.
