Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves are still (purely) in love.
The former “Dracula” co-stars have known each other since the 1980s, and as they revealed during the 2018 press tour for “Destination Wedding,” their on-screen wedding in the 1992 Bram Stoker adaptation may have been legally binding.
On Monday’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, host Josh Horowitz asked Ryder how “two of the biggest Luddites on the planet” stay in touch.
“I know,” Ryder said. “But we text, and we always make it clear who it is, even though the text says… On his birthday, when I’m like, ‘Happy birthday, husband!’ and I write ‘Noni,’ he’s like, ‘Hey, wife! Love you, KR 57.’ On every birthday, he’s like, ‘KR 57,’ or whatever his age is.”
“He’s always done that,” she explained.
Ryder and Reeves knew each other long before they were cast in “Dracula.”
“We met in the late ’80s, like ’87, ’88, at one of the first Independent Spirit Awards at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel,” she told People in 2018. “It wasn’t televised. Buck Henry was the host and we were presenting Best Supporting Actor.”
Ryder also explained to the outlet that she was the one who initiated their collaborative project “Destination Wedding.”
“I emailed him,” she said, adding, “I’m so glad he responded.”
In a 2018 interview with Reeves in Entertainment Weekly, Ryder revealed that director Francis Ford Coppola used “a real Romanian priest” for their “Dracula” wedding scene.
“Are we done?” Reeves asked Ryder, and he confirmed it. “Oh my gosh, we’re married,” he joked.
The Romanian wedding may not have happened, however, as Reeves and Ryder have both pursued various romantic relationships over the years.
Currently, each is in a relationship with someone else: Reeves has been dating artist Alexandra Grant since 2019, and Ryder’s longtime partner is fashion designer Scott Mackinlay Hahn. However, neither actor has ever been married—except, of course, (potentially) to each other.
