Charles Spencer Opens Up About His Relationship with His 18-Year-Younger Partner
Princess Diana’s brother Lord Charles Spencer got real about his relationship with Dr. Cat Jarman, who is 18 years his junior.
“I’m 60, so if I said Cat was my girlfriend, it makes me sound 20, doesn’t it?” Charles, told Mail on Sunday in an interview published on Sunday, November 24. “I’m too old for hearts and flowers stuff, but the best way to describe it is that with Cat, I can be myself.”
He added, “She knows who I am. Who I really am. I don’t have to pretend to be something I am not. And she brings out the best in me.”
Jarman, 42, was quick to agree that the term “boyfriend” is a strange one.
“We are in a relationship,” she said. “That’s the grown-up way to put it.”
Charles is currently navigating an ongoing divorce from estranged wife, Countess Karen Spencer. He confirmed earlier this year that they had split after 13 years of marriage. (Charles and Jarman were first spotted out together shortly thereafter even though their relationship went from friendship to “something else” in March.)
“It is immensely sad,” Charles said during a separate interview with The Mail on Sunday in June. “I just want to devote myself to all my children, and to my grandchildren, and I wish Karen every happiness in the future.”
Karen broke her silence weeks later.
“Just wanted to say that I have been overwhelmed by the messages of love and support. Thank you, it has really meant a lot to me,” she captioned a June 22 Instagram post. “I’m just processing at the moment. Will come back to you soon.”
Months later, The Telegraph reported that Jarman filed a lawsuit against Karen for alleged misuse of private information. No further details were shared at the time.
During his interview with the Daily Mail on Sunday, Charles said that he “wasn’t looking” for anything romantic when meeting Jarman.
“I am 18 years older than Cat and so there wasn’t even the possibility,” he said. “I’ve never been with a much younger person. I wasn’t even thinking romance. I was at the tail end of a marriage. It just wasn’t a possibility.”
Things ended up working out in the end, and Charles noted that he’s fully himself in their relationship.
“I’ve never tried to do a hard sell on Cat. She’s very canny, very emotionally mature,” he said. “With her I don’t pretend to be anything I am not. She knows exactly who I am — and who I am not.”
