Liam Payne’s official cause of death has been confirmed by Argentine officials after the One Direction member suffered a fatal fall from a hotel balcony.
More information about Liam Payne’s tragic death is coming to light.
After the former One Direction member died on Oct. 16 at the age of 31 due to a fatal fall from a balcony at the Casa Sur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, his official cause of death has been confirmed.
According to a release shared by Argentine officials, the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No. 16 reported that the autopsy for Liam found his cause of death to be “polytraumism (multiple traumatic injuries), internal and external hemorrhage.”
Coroners confirmed that the 25 injuries described in the report coincide with those expected from a fall at a height, while noting “the head injuries were sufficient to cause death, while the internal and external hemorrhages in the skull, thorax, abdomen and limbs contributed to the mechanism of death.”
The release confirms no evidence of defensive wounds were found to be present that would suggest “the intervention of third parties.” A toxicology report is reportedly still pending, though the release confirms ” series of substances were seized from the musician’s room, which would prove a previous situation of alcohol and drugs consumption.”
Prior to the autopsy findings, Buenos Aires emergency services chief Alberto Crescenti provided additional information about Liam’s fall, noting the singer’s injuries were so severe first responders were unable to treat them upon arriving at the scene.
“Our role was to head there quickly, give medical attention, and try to resuscitate him, but his injuries were incompatible with life,” he explained to the Argentine publication La Nación in Spanish. “Based on what the team saw, there was apparently a cranial fracture and extremely serious injuries that led to his immediate death.”
He continued, “The team could do absolutely nothing. There was no resuscitation because it was confirmed that he had died. The whole body had very serious injuries.”
The former boy band member, who had gone solo later in his career, had been in Argentina with girlfriend Kate Cassidy.
While Kate—who began dating her former celebrity crush in 2022—had returned home to the United States in the days prior to Liam’s fall, he’d shared glimpses into their time together, including a mirror selfie posted mere hours before his death.
As he shared in a Snapchat video of their time together, “Happy I got some time away.”
Liam’s time in Argentina also coincided with the concert of his former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan, with whom he performed for six years alongside members Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson.
Liam and Kate attended Niall’s Oct. 2 stop of his tour, with Liam telling fans on Snapchat the night before the show, “It’s been a while since me and Niall have spoken. We’ve got a lot to talk about. And I would like to square up a couple of things with the boy. No bad vibes or anything like that. But we need to talk.”
While his former bandmates have yet to comment on Liam’s unexpected death, the “Strip That Down” singer’s family shared their grief over his passing.
“We are heartbroken,” their statement read. “Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul. We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.”
