Known for her work on the series ‘Anne with an E’, the young woman had to interrupt her studies and her career in television
Actress Miranda McKeon has reflected on her long cancer treatment and the impact it has had on her mental health. Now 22, she was diagnosed with the disease when she was just 19.
McKeon was about to start her sophomore year of college when she discovered a lump in her right breast and underwent tests that confirmed the condition. In recent years, she has undergone a double mastectomy, lymph node removal surgeries and chemotherapy.
In an interview with People magazine, McKeon said that she “definitely” wants to return to the industry. Before her career was interrupted, the actress starred in the series ‘Anne with an E’ (2017 – 2019).
“I never thought I would be this happy again,” she said, now with her cancer in remission. “The mental health toll that comes with a cancer diagnosis is so heavy. I would go to bed every day thinking about it.”
During this period, McKeon began receiving psychiatric care. Since then, she has been taking antidepressant medication.
“I never thought I would get to the point where I would think about cancer every day of my life. But now there are days when I don’t think about it. As someone who likes to push themselves to the limit, it really got me down. All I wanted to do was lie in bed, but everything hurt more when I was still, so I needed to cheer myself up,” she revealed.
The actress also recalled another issue that shook her self-esteem: “My hair was a big part of my identity. I really love who I am, I love connecting with people — but I felt like I wasn’t able to present myself the way I wanted to be seen. It created a lot of insecurity. I hated going to parties with a wig.”
With the disease in remission since 2022, Miranda McKeon returned to college in 2023.
