Natasha Lyonne Reveals Jennifer Coolidge Mistook Her for Hilary Duff: ‘I’ve Lost My Edge
Everyone makes mistakes!
Natasha Lyonne appeared on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast on Dec. 3, where she dished on one of her most memorable celebrity interactions. Explaining that she isn’t often mistaken for anyone else, the Russian Doll alum, 45, said one comparison has stuck with her.
“I remember once I dropped out for a while because I was writing all those novels, and Jennifer Coolidge saw me at the Chateau Marmont and I had straight hair, and she thought I was Hilary Duff,” Lyonne recalled. “I was so confused.”
“I was like, maybe I’ve become too well. You know what I mean? Because whatever I’m projecting is something I’d rather scratch real quick — I have lost my edge. Hilary seems like a lovely person, and sometimes I’ll look at pictures of her and be like, ‘I think maybe this is a good thing. I think they mean this kindly.’”
When Horowitz asked “how deep into the conversation” she and Coolidge, 63, got while under the false impression, Lyonne teased, “Not very far.
“Jennifer moves quickly,” she said. “She was sort of like, ‘Oh, I thought you were Hilary Duff,’ and I was like, ‘I’m not,’ and it was over.”
She then joked: “But yeah, I would rather be mistaken for, like, Keith Richards or something.”
Coolidge and Lyonne worked together in 1999 on American Pie, and Coolidge later played Duff’s mother in A Cinderella Story in 2004. Since then, all three have gone on to have successful careers.
Lyonne is currently starring in the 2023 Peacock drama Poker Face, which is slated to return for a second season. Before that, she made a name for herself in television during her six-year run on Orange Is the New Black playing Nicky Nichols from 2013 until 2016.
In the past, Entertainment Weekly reported the actress had a troubled past of addiction and run-ins with the law. She was hospitalized for various ailments in 2005 and has kept her life private since then. In 2014, she began dating fellow actor Fred Armisen, but the two split in 2021, with Lyonne confirming it was likely due to her wanting a swimming pool.
Coolidge, on the other hand, has maintained a steady flow of roles throughout her three-decade-long career. She recently appeared in seasons 1 and 2 of The White Lotus, from which she became a meme on the internet for her now-famous line: “These gays, they’re trying to murder me!”
Duff, 37, is currently focusing on her four children after welcoming a daughter, Townes, with husband Matthew Koma less than a year ago in May 2024. She starred on the television shows including How I Met Your Father and Younger after playing the title character in the Disney Channel series, Lizzie McGuire.
