Jackie Chan’s Movies Are Losing Money
“Panda Plan” has earned more than 300 million yuan after more than 2 months of release. The film has very few screenings left and is expected to leave theaters soon.
According to Maoyan , Panda Plan has now dropped out of the top 30 highest-grossing films in theaters. The film’s total revenue after 62 days of release is 307 million yuan. The film has lost its appeal, only making a small amount of money every day. According to statistics, Jackie Chan’s film only sells an average of 1 ticket per show, with a very low occupancy rate (0.9%). It is expected that Panda Plan will be withdrawn from theaters soon.
Released on October 1, right on China’s National Day, Panda Plan had to compete with a series of domestic and international blockbusters. At one point, the film rose to second place at the box office, just behind The Volunteers: To the War 2. However, the film could not maintain a stable heat, partly because Jackie Chan was no longer the “box office guarantee” name he used to be.
After the National Day holiday, the number of moviegoers dropped significantly. As a result, Panda Plan ‘s revenue growth also plummeted.
Jackie Chan has had many loss-making film projects in recent years. |
Panda Plan’s budget is reportedly around 250 million yuan. Based on the studio’s 37-40% box office share, that means the film needs to gross 675 million yuan to start making a profit.
Thus, by leaving the theaters after only earning more than 300 million NDT, Jackie Chan’s film is estimated to have caused a loss of about 125 – 135 million NDT. However, according to the producer’s plan, Panda Plan will still continue its journey at the box office in some countries around the world, so the loss will be more or less reduced.
With a duration of nearly 100 minutes, Panda Plan revolves around Jackie Chan himself. He adopts a panda named Hu Hu. However, the animal becomes the target of an international criminal group. They offer a reward of 100 million USD for mercenaries to capture Hu Hu. Jackie Chan and his close agents must cooperate to protect the panda and fight against the villains.
The film was considered funny and entertaining. However, many people said that the film’s content was too childish, with many silly details that did not suit the taste of adult audiences.
