Megan Moroney Reveals What She Learned from Kenny Chesney on Tour
Megan Moroney is on her way to the top after winning the 2024 Country Music Association Awards New Artist of the Year — but she is still looking to pal Kenny Chesney for career advice.
“There’s probably a lot of life advice that I’d have to sit down and think about,” Moroney, 27, exclusively told Us Weekly when asked about Chesney, 56, on Wednesday, November 20, in the CMAs press room.
She noted that after watching Chesney in concert night after night, she realized that he “plays for over 90 minutes” and “doesn’t even play all of his hits.”
“A big note that I took [from that] was, ‘OK, you gotta write a lot of good songs,’” she explained. “Because it is just incredible that he can play for that long and it doesn’t even play some of his most known hits [because] he doesn’t have time.”
Moroney joined Chesney on the road for his Sun Goes Down Tour over the summer. During their time together, she took notes and had fun riding tractors on stage with the country legend.
“Honestly, I don’t know if y’all saw, but it was in second gear when it should have been first gear, and I almost popped a wheelie and busted my butt,” Moroney told Us at the CMAs, referring to her tractor skills (or lack thereof).
Despite the near-accident, Moroney gushed over the “fun” times she had with the “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy” singer. “That weekend was my favorite weekend of the tour, and that tour was my favorite tour of all time,” she shared.
Now that the tour has ended and she has had some time back at home, Moroney said her “dream tour” scenario would be to “go back on the road with Kenny.”
“Just learning so much from him as an artist, a performer, and then also becoming such good friends with him,” Moroney said, before going on to call Chesney “a great person.” “It’s cool to surround yourself with people like him,” she added.
Chesney — a country music icon — has been making music since the 1990s, which includes 20 studio albums, 12 CMA Awards, 11 Academy of Country Music Awards and six Grammy nominations.
Moroney, meanwhile, released her first single, “Tennessee Orange” in 2022 before dropping her debut album, Lucky, the following year. Amid her rise within the country music industry, she won New Female Artist of the Year at the 2023 Academy of Country Music Awards.
In July, she released her second album, Am I Okay?, and her song “Never Left Me” was featured on the Twisters soundtrack. Moroney announced in September that she will embark on a 25-date North American tour to support her second record starting in March 2025.
“I’m very excited to play the whole album for everyone in the future,” Moroney exclusively told Us at the time. “There are certain songs that I’m saving that I have never played live yet.”
To round out her big year, which included touring with Chesney, Moroney won her first CMA Award on Wednesday. (She also performed “Am I Okay?” on stage at the awards show.)
“The way [my fans] show up for me, the way they care about my songs and they make signs and t-shirts and they wait outside the venue starting at 3am, it’s really insane to me,” Moroney said during her acceptance speech. “This means so much to me.”
