The Kardashian-Jenner family was treated to a special advance screening of Wicked thanks to the film’s stars, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo—but some fans found the gesture to be more “tone deaf” than anything else.
Kim Kardashian took to Instagram on Tuesday, Oct. 22, to share clips and pics from the elaborate affair to her Stories, which took place at the reality star’s home and featured Wicked-themed decorations, drinks, and more. SKIMS even provided pink and green pajamas for the screening, which the entire family—including Kim, Khloé, and Kourtney Kardashian, Kris and Kylie Jenner, and the sisters’ children—wore for a group shot with Grande and Erivo.
“We laughed, we cried (a few times) and we loved it so much! Thank you @arianagrande and @cynthiaerivo for watching @wickedmovie with us tonight… The most magical pajama party,” Kim wrote under the photo.
While the famous family appeared to have a blast at the screening, many social media users thought the promotional effort was a misfire.
“Man this is super disappointing. So many with so little are obsessed with Wicked and are thrilled and anxiously awaiting its premier next month,” wrote one Instagram user. “I’m not hating on the Kardashian family for having the money to be able to do this, but I think the film’s creators/producers made a bit of a tone deaf choice here.”
“So disappointed. More people could have used this. Not them,” agreed another person.
“Ugh this would have been so much more meaningful had it gone to a children’s hospital or a school,” someone else pointed out.
“This is a misstep from the Promo/Marketing team. It’s giving major ick,” complained a fourth fan.
“Lol why not do this for idk…people who cant go to the movies??? Kids who are in the hospital???? Something?????” another commenter wanted to know.
Non-celebrities have to wait until next month to see Wicked, as it is scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 22, 2024.
