More details are emerging about the sudden death of One Direction star Liam Payne. Initial toxicology results show the 31-year-old died from cocaine in his system, the Associated Press reports.
Final toxicology results are still pending and are not expected to be released for weeks, but the preliminary report “suggests evidence of cocaine exposure,” an official explained to the agency before emphasizing that the initial results are not an exact count of how much was circulating in his blood when he died.
The official, who spoke to the agency on condition of anonymity, said a preliminary autopsy report released last week found the One Direction singer died of “multiple blunt trauma” and “internal and external bleeding.”

Payne died on October 16 as a result of “a fall from the balcony of the third-floor room of the hotel in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo where he was staying,” according to the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No. 16, temporarily headed by Marcelo Roma. He was 31.
Since news of the British musician’s death broke, many industry stars have paid tribute to Payne, including Justin Bieber, one of many icons mourning Payne’s passing.
On Monday, Bieber shared a heartbreaking fan-made video on Instagram dedicated to Payne, encouraging followers to remember that they are “allowed to grieve as a fan. You are allowed to love someone you never met. You are allowed to admire someone for their art. You are allowed to cry, to pray, to feel like a part of you is gone.” He captioned it: “Rest in peace Liam.”

The circumstances surrounding Payne’s death are still being investigated as a “suspicious” death, although it appears that Payne was alone when the fall occurred and that the musician was “experiencing some type of substance abuse outbreak,” according to the preliminary report.
Authorities confirmed Payne died shortly after 5 p.m. at the Casa Sur hotel in Palermo, on Costa Rica Street. An employee called the emergency line to report a guest “in a state of intoxication and drug use who had broken several items in the room.”

Upon arrival, officials discovered that “Payne had fallen from his room balcony and died at the scene due to his injuries.”
Buenos Aires police said they found Payne’s hotel room “completely disorganized” with “many broken items.” Packages of clonazepam (commonly sold under the brand name Klonopin and a central nervous system depressant), energy supplements and other over-the-counter drugs were found scattered among his belongings, according to the AP. Forensic teams also reported that a bottle of whiskey, a lighter and a cell phone were recovered from the courtyard where Payne’s body was found.
His body was then transferred to the Judicial Mortuary, where an autopsy was performed between 9:45 and 11:05 p.m. The medical examiner ordered histopathological, biochemical, and toxicological tests.

“At this time, analysis of gastric contents, alcohol and toxins in blood, vitreous humor, bile, nasal secretions and urine is necessary to determine alcohol and toxins,” the report said.
According to the autopsy, forensic experts said they found 25 injuries “consistent with those caused by a fall from a height.” They also noted that “the cranial injuries were sufficient to cause death, while internal and external hemorrhages in the skull, chest, abdomen, and extremities contributed to the mechanism of death.”
In 2008, Payne was discovered by Simon Cowell while auditioning for “The X Factor” when he was 14. Despite being cut, he returned to the show two years later and joined Harry Styles Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson to form a supergroup that later finished third in the competition.

One Direction signed with Cowell after “The X Factor” and became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.
The group rose to global fame with their hits, including “What Makes You Beautiful,” “Story of My Life,” and “Best Song Ever.” They released five chart-topping albums in five years after competing on “The X Factor” and embarked on four world tours.
Payne has one child, a 7-year-old son, Bear, with ex-girlfriend Cheryl Cole .
