Lee Soon Jae, Known as the ‘National Grandfather,’ Faces Worsening Health Issues.
Due to his deteriorating health, Lee Soon Jae’s upcoming performances have been canceled, Hankyung reported on October 13.
Park Company has announced that all performances of the play Waiting for Godot starring actor Lee Soon Jae, scheduled from October 13 to October 20, will be canceled. The reason given is due to his deteriorating health. All ticket prices will be fully refunded to the audience, through the booking agency.
“Lee Soon Jae wanted to stand on stage to keep his promise to the audience. However, we still had to make the decision to cancel his performance based on the doctor’s opinion. Lee Soon Jae needs to rest more due to his declining health,” the management agency said.
Park Company added: “We are truly sorry for disappointing the audience after a long wait. Lee Soon Jae will focus on recovering so that he can return to the stage with everyone’s encouragement.”
Previously, Lee Soon Jae’s performance on October 9 and his master class lecture on October 12 were also postponed indefinitely. Many audiences and colleagues expressed concern about the veteran actor’s current health.
“I was very worried while filming. I was worried about senior Lee Soon Jae’s poor health. Because his eyesight was poor and he couldn’t see the script clearly, he had to write the lines in large letters on a piece of paper and memorize them,” actor Kim Yong Gun shared.
Lee Soon Jae was born in 1934. He is a veteran Korean actor with a career spanning over 6 decades. Starting his career on the small screen in 1961, Lee Soon Jae has appeared in hundreds of television and film productions. The actor is nicknamed “the nation’s grandfather” by the audience because he often plays the roles of grandfathers and elders in the family.
Some of the notable films that Lee Soon Jae has participated in include High Kick Through the Roof, Potato Star, What Parents Didn’t Tell You, and Late Blooming Flowers … Thanks to his great contributions to the Korean film industry, he was awarded the Geumgwan Order of Cultural Merit, second class, in 2018.
