For the First Time, Billie Eilish Hits the Road Without Her Brother Finneas O’Connell

Billie Eilish has transitioned from a teenage sensation to a fully-fledged adult, according to her brother and collaborator, Finneas O’Connell. This evolution is one reason why, for the first time, he won’t be joining her on the “Hit Me Hard and Soft” tour—except for a few select dates—where he typically plays guitar as he has on previous tours.

In an interview with Vogue published on Tuesday, O’Connell shared, “There were many years where I felt like I could never miss a show because Billie was only 16 or 17, and I felt it was essential to be there for every moment.” He acknowledged the significant growth Eilish has undergone, stating, “The truth is, over the last few years of touring, she’s really become an adult.”

O’Connell described Eilish’s maturity as reflected in her “disciplined way of existing on tour.” He noted that she prioritizes her health by sleeping during the day to ensure she’s well-rested for performances, dedicating hours to physical therapy, and engaging in vocal warm-ups to prepare.

Recently, O’Connell announced his own solo tour, titled “For Cryin’ Out Loud!” set to kick off in February, following the release of his latest album of the same name.

Throughout Eilish’s earlier tours, their parents, Maggie Baird and Patrick O’Connell, have been a constant presence, with Baird managing everything from scheduling to ensuring Eilish is well-fed, while the elder O’Connell contributed as a member of her stage crew. “I will get your tampons and cook you a burrito on a moment’s notice, even if I have to use an iron to do it,” Baird humorously remarked in the Vogue interview.

This time, however, both parents plan to step back, allowing Eilish to experience her tour independently—an opportunity they liken to her “college years.”

Eilish won’t be entirely alone, as indie-rock duo Nat and Alex Wolff, who she describes as some of her closest friends, will be opening for her. This tour also marks the first time Eilish is traveling with her own live band and bringing along some childhood friends.

“I hope it’s going to be the f***ing fun,” Eilish declared to Vogue, as she embraces this new chapter in her life and career.
